The architects von Gerkan, Marg und Partners (gmp) and KCAP Architects & Planners in cooperation with landscape architects Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl won the competition for Zhanjiang Science and Technology City in Shanghai. gmp and KCAP already developed the urban masterplan for Hamburg’s OlympiaCity, so it’s their second successful collaboration.

The building land of Zhenjiang Science and Technology City is located in Pudong, an aspiring area to the east of the city. It is well strategically placed between the city center of Shanghai and the Pudong International Airport. The overall national aim is called „strengthening research and development“ and this new district is part of it. In this context it is intended to create China’s biggest und most important science city on a site that measures about 84 square kilometers. The pilot project will serve as a national showpiece.

The significant location factor of prosperous high-tech developments: the formation of clusters. In this way interdisciplinary exchange and local networking can take place. Because of that the designer team worked out the concept called „living university“ – a constellation of clusters around the already existing and future high-tech institutions in combination with attractive residences and cultural, sports and educational facilities. The design creates diverse complete works by utilizing the existing structures in the area and integrating waterways, landscaping and a dense network of public transport systems. The result: attractive living environments in mixed-function urban parcels.

KCAP are responsible for the overall strategic urban masterplan. It was designed for robust growth allowing for long-term development and the dynamic nature of the terrain. Based on this plan, gmp has developed more detailed concepts for three key sites including the main center of the Science City and the Public Center. The design partner for the integrated landscape and environmental technology design was Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl.
