A submission led by Janet Rosenberg & Studio has recently been selected as the winning proposal for the “Visionary (re)Generation Open International Design Competition” for the development of the Campus of the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada.

Janet Rosenberg & Studio collaborated with a team including Cibinel Architects Ltd., ARUP and Landmark Planning & Design on the winning entry titled “Arpent”. The competition, run by the University of Manitoba, creates a planning framework for the Fort Garry Campus (279 hectares) and the adjacent Southwood Land (48.5 hectares), a former golf course. Through the competition, the University of Manitoba invited urban thinkers to reimagine the university’s Fort Garry campus. Forty-five teams representing 17 countries took on the challenge. The winning team will now begin a process to refine and further develop the concept with the University, the City of Winnipeg and the surrounding community.

According to the jury “Methods and strategies of traditional planning … of vehicular transport are being questioned in favour of models closer to earlier models of village structures … However, physiological needs for private space, physical space, temporal transition and mental decompression are to be championed in the design of a new academic residential community.”

Second place: Perkins+Will, with 1X1 Architecture, and PFS
Vancouver / Winnipeg / Vancouver, Canada

Third place: DTAH, with Cohlmeyer Architecture Limited, and Integral Group and BA Group
Toronto / Winnipeg / Toronto / Toronto, Canada

Fourth place: IAD Independent Architectural Diplomacy S.A., with Bomainpasa and PGI GRUP

The finalists will be displayed at Manitoba Hydro Place from December 11-29.
