Ancient windmills are indispensable to the Aegean landscape in Turkey, especially around Alaçatı. The whole district was the subject of a comprehensive urban renewal project dating back to 2007. “The Alaçatı Windmills Park and Entrance Square and Promenade Project” by Turkish architects UrbAr was part of this process and foresaw the restoration of the ancient windmills.

This also included the designated space around them, which was to be transformed into a cultural landscape, open for public use. The first phase included a new promenade, an urban square and several shops or restaurants. It was completed in 2009. The second phase of the project was called “Windmills Park” and included the renewal of the area around the historic windmills together with the restoration of the windmill structures. Structural works were completed in 2013 with soft landscaping following in 2015.

The intervention involved restoration and removal of the debris around the historic windmills, opening the site for public visit. Across from the windmills a new pebble covered court with low surrounding walls was designed. All the landscaping was concentrated in a new design surrounding the new court. All existing trees were preserved and new ones planted for further provision of shading.
